Basil is one of the most popular herbs that is used all across the world in different dishes. It looks similar to the mint plant and has several beneficial properties. Basil not only adds to the flavor of the food but also has a number of health benefits due to which people generally prefer adding it to the dish. You can grow them outside the house i.e on the lawn of the backyard of your house or you can also grow them indoors. So, in this article, I will talk about basil plants and animals and if basil is really harmful to the animals or is it just a myth.

Basil Plant and Pets

Given below is a list of some of the effects of basil on animals along with the solution:

1. Safe to Consume

Basil is basically a herb that comes with multiple benefits and it is normally consumed by people all over the world. Its advantages cannot be denied because they are numerous and effective too. However, it is not essential that something that suits humans may also suit animals too. Animals cannot consume basil and they do not generally like it. However, if animals come across basil accidentally and consume it, there will not be any serious side effects. So, it is not toxic or too dangerous.

2. Drawbacks

One major drawback that basil can have on animals is indigestion. Other than that, there are no other significant side effects. Plus, basil is not toxic so it will not cause any serious issue if cats eat it. Basil has antioxidant properties which are really beneficial but it is not necessary that animals too will benefit from it because they have a different digestive system. For carnivorous animals, it is not easy to digest. So, you need to make sure that if you have pets at home, they do not eat any such thing that can disturb them or harm them in any way.

3. Fragrance

Basil has a very soothing smell which may attract animals, particularly cats. Chances are that your cat will not show any reaction towards it. However, if a reaction occurs, you need to take your cat to the vet. Cats usually do not like eating plants but it is only sometimes that they tend to taste them without any major reason. Moreover, basil has not any good effect on cats too because cats are carnivorous and it is hard for them to digest herbs like basil. The best thing you can do is to not let your cat eat basil. However, it is understandable that you can also not keep an eye on your cat all the time.

4. Carnivorous Animals

Some people say that basil is good for dogs while others say that it can lead to an upset stomach or inflammation or even diarrhea. In my view, if dogs eat a little bit of it then it may be beneficial but in excessive quantities, it can lead to problems. Dogs are also carnivorous so they may have the same issue if indigestion. So, it is better to not let your dog eat basil in excessive amounts. Even if they eat it, make sure it is a small quantity. You can just grind it and sprinkle a little bit of it on the dog's food and that will be more than enough.

5. Solutions

In case your pet feels upset after eating this herb, you should take them to a veterinarian. Do not panic or stress too much over it. This is something really normal and happens usually if animals are unable to digest something. However, once your pet recovers from it, try to bring specific food for them that is solely made for them and is usually available in the market in the form of tins.
