English Ivy is a beautiful green plant with dark green leaves. It is used to cover the ground, climbing terrace grills or walls. I love to grow English Ivy in my garden as it covers all the empty spaces over the land, making my garden look more natural and healthy because of greenery. How to Grow English Ivy

There are two different procedures with which we can grow English Ivy Plant. Both are mentioned below, learn and try the one which you think you can perform well.

Growing English Ivy with Seeds

  1. This is a time-consuming method but effective to grow a surplus amount of plants in your garden.
  2. You need to go with the stratification process before planting seeds. In this, you have to store the seeds in the refrigerator for almost 60 days.
  3. After the stratification process, take a bowl of water, place the seeds in them for one whole night. This is done to increase germination.
  4. Take a seed tray and add highly fertilized organic soil to it.
  5. Sprinkle English Ivy seeds in the germination tray over the soil. Push them slightly in the soil with your fingertips.
  6. Never cover Ivy seeds with soil on top.
  7. Add a little water with a spray and do not overwater the seeds.
  8. Check for the soil regularly, and keep it moist for maximum germination.
  9. After you notice the seeds have germinated, keep taking care of the plant.
  10. Transplant the plant in its permanent place after it has grown to 5 to 7 inches.
  11. Take care of roots when you are transplanting the plant. Try not to hurt them or break them.
  12. The recently transplanted Ivy plant needs excess watering. Give your plant lots of water soon after transplantation.

Growing English Ivy with Cuttings

  1. Take another plant to make cuttings from. Try to get a healthy parent plant, not a very young one and not a very old one.
  2. Look keenly for the nodes. These are the places on the stem where the leaf comes out.
  3. Check for the nodes and get ready to cut just below a node.
  4. Use gardening tools to make cuttings from the parent plant of about 5 to 7 inches in length.
  5. Take out the leaves from the last half part of the stem you have cut.
  6. Leave the cutting with only the top few leaves in it.
  7. If you have rooting hormone available, dip the last 2 inches of the cuttings into the rooting hormone.
  8. Make highly fertilized and organic soil to help your English ivy grow better.
  9. Put the soil in pots or areas where you are going to plant the cuttings.
  10. Plant cuttings in the soil and tighten them from the surroundings of the stem. Try to keep it straight.
  11. Try to plant cuttings with a few inches gap between them to make them develop leaves and roots conveniently.

Tips For An English Ivy Plant To Grow Well

  • After planting the cutting into the soil, cover your plant with a plastic bag to initiate a better growth process.
  • Give your Ivy plant bright light. Avoid direct or harsh sunlight on your plant.
  • Try to plant the English Ivy in organic soil. It enhances growth.
  • Make the pot or surface area well-drained so that the water will not stay in the root and damage them.
  • Give water only when you feel the top layer of the soil in the plant is drying out.
  • Permanently attach some support to the plant, so the plant would hold the support and grow better.
  • Keep the seeds in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting.
  • Do not overwater seeds when you plant them.
