Pros and cons

Pros

Here are reasons to buy, pros or things we liked but Home Legend Bamboo flooring:

a). Beautiful, adorable, and charming

The number one thing everyone seems to like about Home Legend bamboo floorings is their beauty, elegance, and charm. These planks are available in many lovely colors and surface textures that create a luxurious or gorgeous look.

Whether you want a rustic, modern, Mediterranean, Southwestern, classic, mid-century, farmhouse styles, etc., and so on, you won’t miss planks.

Finally, depending on your choice, many planks will perfectly complement your modern or traditional home décor.

b). Easy to install

Home Legend bamboo planks are easy to install, especially the engineered planks with a click-lock installation profile. Even those with a tongue and groove profile are still easy to install. Just glue them down with a suitable adhesive - no nailing or staples.

However, ensure you follow the recommended installation guideline, including the suitable subfloors and underlayment. Don’t forget to acclimate these planks.

c). Durable

If installed and care for correctly, Home Legend bamboo floorings are very durable. They even have a lifetime/55-year residential warranty and a 10-year light commercial warranty.

They stand well even in high traffic and pets (large dogs or cats but keep their nails short). However, some people are unhappy with their durability, something we attribute to incorrect care and a bad environmental condition.

d). GREENGUARD Gold Certification

These bamboo floorings have GREENGUARD Gold indoor quality hair certification, meaning they have been tested for over 10000 volatile organic compounds like formaldehyde, and they surpass or meet required standards.

Also, the certification will earn you credits in CHPS Best Practices Manual for K-12 schools, Green Guide for Healthcare, and NAHB Green Building Guidelines. Also, you will earn credits from Green Globes, Regreen, US Green Building Council’s LEED® Green Building Rating Systems, among other building codes

e). Versatile

You will get solid strand-woven, engineered, or SPC as well as horizontal bamboo planks. Also, depending on your choice, you will have planks for various installation levels (below/on/above grade) and for different rooms.

For instance, the SPC bamboo that is water-resistant will work well for kitchen, laundry rooms, or areas exposed to water.

Cons

Some of the things we didn’t like about Home Legend bamboo flooring or cons include the following:

a), scratch and dents easily

The biggest complaint about Home Legend bamboo planks is scratching, denting, including micro-scratches, scuff marks, especially those with the horizontal toast bamboo flooring. While most scratches may not reach the bamboo itself, scratches on the protective finish look unsightly.

However, there are those happy with the scratch resistance of these planks. Also, you can easily hide the scratch using a staining “touch up” pen, stains, or putty. However, deep scratches will need replacement.

b). Extreme color variation

While slight color and grain variation is acceptable, some planks show excessive color variation making them unusable as they will be so conspicuous.

Order your planks for the same project at once (reduces changes of color variation) and sample up to four boxes to check for color variations or defects.

c). Lots of care

These bamboo planks need a little bit of babying, i.e., you need to clean them with correct products, keep the right environment and protect them. Those with lighter colors will easily show dirt and require frequent cleaning.

However, we don’t see much difference since bamboo and hardwood flooring requires lots of care. They are not for everyone.

d). Poor handling during shipping

Home Depot needs to ensure their planks are ship safely since many complaints of damages during shipping.

Note

  • Warping, cupping, splitting, expansion, or contraction (gaps) is an indication that the prevailing humidity and temperature don’t match up the recommend levels, i.e., 35%-55% relative humidity and 60°F-80°F. These are issues that cut across most hardwood and other bamboo flooring brands.
  • As you walk, cranking, popping, and noise may arise if you don’t install them correctly as recommended.

Price/cost

Home Legend bamboo flooring price ranges from $2.49-$4.79 per square foot. This price is exclusive of professional installation cost, whose natural average is $2-$5 per square foot.

Their cheapest planks Strand-woven click water resistant bamboo flooring (SPC) going for $2.49/Sq. Ft, followed by Hand Scraped Strand Woven Spice (engineered) selling at $2.99 Sq. Ft.

In general, their solid strand-woven bamboo planks cost more than engineered, including the SPC.

Warranties

Legend Homes bamboo flooring comes with a limited residential lifetime warranty, a limited manufacturing defect warranty, and a limited light commercial warranty indicated on warranty schedule, marketing, or sales documents. Additionally, the SPC has a waterproof warranty.

Typically, you will get 55-year residential and 10-year light commercial warranties depending on whether the specific bamboo planks are for residential or both residential and commercial.

Kindly ensure you familiarize yourself with the terms, conditions, and exclusions since some damages are not covered.

Finally, when you receive your Home Legend bamboo flooring, kindly check for any defects and ensure they are within the 5% tolerable but don’t open more than four boxes.

Put any defective ones aside and return them to the manufacturer if they are all very flawed.

Installation instruction

We will not go into details on Home Legend bamboo flooring installation instructions. However, we will give you an overview to help you know if these floorings are for you or not.

Ensure subfloors or the acceptable existing floors meet all the installation requirements depending on whether you install solid, engineered, or SPC bamboo flooring.

Secondly, keep consistent relative humidity (RH) of 35%-55% and temperature 60°F-80°F during acclimation, installation, and lifespan of these bamboo floorings. Drier climates will cause severe shrinkage. Wet environments will cause plank expansion.

To maintain these conditions, use HVACs. Alternatively, humidifiers and air conditions during hot drier climates and dehumidifiers and air conditions during humid conditions.

Thirdly, all Home Legend bamboo flooring require acclimationfor at least 72 hours, with areas that have extreme conditions requiring more time.

Finally, ensure the subfloors have specified conditions, including moisture content, correct adhesives, and proper expansion gaps. Also, where necessary, use the right sound underlayment and moisture barrier or retarder

Pro Tip: For large area installation, buy all your planks at once to minimize variations in appearance.

a). Solid strand-woven planks

Home Legend solid strand-woven bamboo floor planks come with a Tongue and Groove installation profile intended for on or above grade level installation by full-glue spread method.

You can install them on concrete, wood, and existing floors. Acceptable existing floors are linoleum, solid hardwood, ceramic tiles, terrazzo, or any floors sealed against moisture.

However, you cannot install them on floating floors, needle punch felt, edge-glued linoleum, carpet, or any floors that absorb moisture. Also, don’t install them on radiant heated subfloors.

b). Engineered

Home legend engineered bamboo floorings come with a click-lock system, and their primary installation method is floating. However, full-spread gluing is also acceptable.

You can install them on all levels (above, on, or below grade) on concrete, wood, or existing floors. However, for particle boards or fiberboards, only float them.

Acceptable existing floors include any moisture sealing floors like hardwood, terrazzo, ceramic tiles, or linoleum.  Avoid any that absorb moisture like carpet, edge-glued linoleum, or needle punch felt.

Finally, you can use Home Legend engineered bamboo flooring over radiant heated subfloors. However the temperature shouldn’t exceed 84°F. Additionally, if you opt for glue down, talk to the manufacturer for further guidance.

c) SPC flooring

Home Legend SPC bamboo flooring comes with a click-lock profile and requires float installation. You can install them on all levels (below/on/above) on concrete, wood including oriented Strand Board (OSB) and plywood, or even on the existing subfloor.

Ensure subfloors can reduce squeaking noises and click-lock mechanism failure and use a less compressive sound control underlayment.

Finally, don’t install these planks on radiant heated subfloors.

Cleaning Home Legend bamboo flooring

Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum floors regularly to get rid of dust and grit that may cause scratches. If you vacuum, ensure your vacuum cleaner doesn’t have a beater (or has a removable one) or power rotary brush head as they will damage your floors.

When cleaning, apply your cleaning solution to the microfiber mop or cloth and not directly to the floor and clean along plank direction.

Use distilled water for lightly soiled spots. For moderate use, a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water in ratios of 1:2. Increase isopropyl alcohol for areas with more challenging stains.

If the stains are so tough, use cleaning products intended for rigid core plank flooring. Afterward, rinse the area and dry any residual water.

Don’t use wax, varnish coating, chlorinated solvents. Also, avoid abrasive products (steel wool or scouring powder) as they will cause scratches.

Never wet-mop or put liquid cleaners or water on the floor. These two may allow moisture can seep between cracks and clean any liquid on floors immediately.

Finally, if you have any new product designed for wood floors, try it on a tiny area that isn’t conspicuous or on a scrap plank to see who does the cleaning.

Care and maintenance

  • Non-moving furniture or other heavy objects should have furniture pads. For those with wheels, use non-rubber soft wheels/casters and ensure they are clean. Also, place that rolling chairs on protective mats.
  • Have doormats outside and inside your doors to trap dirt, grit, water, and so on.
  • Keep pet nails trimmed, remove shoes with cleats, spikes, or sharp heels
  • Don’t use rubber backed rugs
  • Use blinds and close curtains in case of extreme sunlight exposure.
  • Change furniture and area rug location once or twice a year. This rearrangement will change traffic areas or UV light exposure areas, ensuring even wearing and coloration.
  • Use a dolly and protective sheets of plywood when moving appliances or furniture. Don’t drag them on the floor.
  • Keep the required temperature and humidity level. Massive changes may cause shrinkage or expansion.
  • Ensure the SPC core isn’t exposed to basic or alkaline solutions

Repair

Use correct colored staining “touch up” pen to repair very small or light scratches, putty, or stains for slightly deep scratches. If scratches are so unsightly, consider replacement of planks or seek professional help.

Our verdict

Home Legend bamboo flooring planks are well-rated, positively reviewed, and worth every penny you spend on them. They look stunningly gorgeous, are durable, and easy to install.

However, we insist on correct installation, care, and protection to elongate their lifespan and avoid scratches, dents, or damages, including water damage.
